College Basketball History Is Filled With Milestones

By admin on October 11, 2010

The next major landmark was the introduction of the five-player format. This happened on January 18, 1896 during an intercollegiate game in Iowa City. By the early 1900s, the game had spread to 90 colleges, most of them located in the East and Midwest. This number continued to swell and by 1914 as many as 360 colleges had introduced the game.

In 1915 the Amateur Athletic Union of the United States, the NCAA, and the YMCA joined hands to streamline the game, and set up a committee to frame rules. This period also saw the formation of a number of regional conferences.

The first NCAA Men’s College Basketball Championship tournament was held in Evanston in 1939, and was cheered by 5,500 basketball fans. It was organized by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and was won by University of Oregon. After this, the NCAA took over the national basketball championship tournament.

The year 1940 witnessed the first college basketball game to be aired on television. This game was played between Pittsburgh and Fordham at Madison Square Garden, and ever since then basketball became a national obsession, drawing huge crowds. But there is nothing that beats March Madness, when almost 350 American colleges compete for the NCAA basketball crown. It is the most watched event in the US.

Till 1950, the NCAA tourney had eight teams competing against each other. These teams represented each of the eight NCAA districts. The number of teams was increased to 16 in 1951. In this format, 10 conference champions qualified automatically while the remaining six teams were chosen on the basis of their performance. In 1954, the number of teams went up to 24, and in 1975, a 32-team bracket was adopted. This was increased to 48 in 1980 and to 64 in 1985.

Over the years, college basketball has gone through a remarkable change. There are a number of players who showcase their talent in college basketball, and rise to become stars. There is huge fan following for this game, and most of the NBA stars trace their origins to college basketball.

College basketball is a very exciting game for the entire family. It can be a rallying
point for most any family or friends plus a great night out. The slam dunks are extra exciting and you might even hear “holy crap did you see that, I can’t believe my eyes”.

What ever you do go to at least one game and than make your decision.

College Basketball Merchandise Nostalgia

By admin on October 11, 2010

College basketball and merchandise is among the most popular today as anytime in the past history of the sport and growing each year in leaps and bounds. College basketball
In-fact is one of the most popular sports today.

Be it memorabilia, apparel or footwear, the demand for college basketball merchandise continues to grow. More and more Americans are turning nostalgic and buying basketball jerseys of their college or autographed caps. Their demand is matched by today’s generation that lives on fashion styles launched by basketball stars.

The demand peaks during March when the NCAA tourney starts. Suddenly, there is a great rush for college jerseys, caps, shorts, logos, headbands, writs bands, and any other knickknack associated with the game.

Basketball shoes are especially in great demand. Everyone wants to wear a shoe named after a basketball star. Part of this demand is fuelled by footwear companies like Nike, Adidas and Reebok, which have launched basketball shoes after the names of basketball stars. The high voltage advertising accompanying basketball games adds to the basketball fever.

The arrival of the Internet has made the basketball merchandise even more accessible. Buyers can purchase anything form college flags, banners, hats, helmets, jackets, to
shoes, shorts, watches, jewelry, display cases etc. Today, it is possible to buy memorabilia like watches worn by revered coaches or jerseys of famous stars. Even photographs of historic matches played in the past are available on the net.

Most of the sites sell the merchandise college-wise. This makes life easier for basketball fans that are looking to buy basketball products associated with their college. There are some sites that supply custom-made basketball uniforms. The buyer has to enter his requirements to get jerseys, shorts or jackets of his size and choice.

Some innovative marketers even sell tailgate and folding chairs painted in college colors.
Stainless Steel and Pewter Travel Mug, Snack Helmet, Stainless Steel Thermos,
College Neon Signs are some of the other products that are today being hawked as basketball merchandise. The tech-savvy has even started selling optical mouse in college colors!

Auction sites are another great source to buy basketball merchandise. Hundreds of fans put up basketball memorabilia on the auction sites, and wait for the best bid. Of course, one has to be careful while bidding on these sites. It is quite possible that the memorabilia may turn out to be fake. The bidder must always look at the return policy offered by the seller and his testimonials before ordering the memorabilia.

An Epidemic Of Heart Failure

By admin on October 11, 2010

It starts already with the kids. Nowadays obesity is becoming a serious problem with the kids. It has been revealed in the survey that almost 65% of infant population is said to be suffering from obesity and its related diseases. According to the experts obesity is the base which leads to high cholesterol in the higher ages. Lack of proper care and attention over children always leads them to many diseases for which parents can’t even repent in the future. It has been noticed that obese or overweight children are more prone to cholesterol and its related diseases. They not only suffer from cholesterol related but also from many heart and cardiovascular diseases.

The following information provided by the National Institutes of Health
Researchers now have what they see as proof of a heart failure epidemic. And they are issuing a call to action for health care systems to meet the need.

An estimated 4.8 million Americans have congestive heart failure (CHF). Increasing prevalence, hospitalizations, and deaths have made CHF a major chronic condition in the United States. It often is the end stage of cardiac disease. Half of the patients diagnosed with CHF will be dead within 5 years. Each year, there are an estimated 400,000 new cases.

CHF is the first-listed diagnosis in 875,000 hospitalizations, and the most common diagnosis in hospital patients age 65 years and older. In that age group, one fifth of all hospitalizations have a primary or secondary diagnosis of heart failure.

Visits to physicians’ offices for CHF increased from 1.7 million in 1980 to 2.9 million in 1993. The financial and other losses of caregivers for these patients are large as well.

The magnitude of the problem of CHF is large now, but it is expected to get much worse because:
As more and more cardiac patients are able to survive and live longer with their disease, their opportunity for developing CHF increases.

Future growth in the elderly population will likely result in increasing numbers of persons with this condition regardless of trends in coronary disease morbidity and mortality.
end of information provided by the National Institutes of Health

What is Heart Failure?

Despite the way it sounds, heart failure does not mean that the heart suddenly stopped working or that you are about to die. Rather, heart failure is a common condition that usually develops slowly as the heart muscle weakens and needs to work harder to keep blood flowing through the body.
As more people survive heart attacks but are left with weakened hearts, the United States faces a new and often misunderstood epidemic. The good news is that we now know a great deal more about heart failure and the importance of early diagnosis and treatment.

Signs and symptioms from “wikipedia” of decompensated heart failure include pulmonary edema (fluid accumulation in the lungs), ascites (fluid in the abdominal cavity), peripheral edema (fluid build-up in dependent portions of the body). Other physical examination findings include rales heard on chest auscultation, an enlarged or pulsatile liver, and jugular venous distension. Reduced function in other organs can occur because they are not receiving enough blood. The patient may experience other organ conditions years before CHF is diagnosed.

Symptoms of decompensated heart failure include dyspnea (shortness of breath) on exertion, orthopnea (dyspnea that increases upon lying down), fatigue and paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea (“cardiac asthma”, shortness of breath that occurs hours or minutes after lying down).

Individuals with heart failure are sensitive to small shifts in their intravascular volume status (the amount of fluid in their circulatory system). Increasing the volume in their circulatory system can cause symptoms and signs of decompensated heart failure, while decreasing the volume in the circulatory system can cause hypotension.

Chest X-rays (CXRs) are frequently used to aid in the diagnosis of CHF. Signs of CHF on CXR are[1]:
Vascular redistribution
Peribronchial cuffing/interstitial edema (bat-shaped)
Kerley B lines
Consolidation of lower lung fields
Cardiomegaly

How Can I Prevent Heart Failure From Worsening?

Keep your blood pressure low. In heart failure, the release of hormones causes the blood vessels to constrict or tighten. The heart must work hard to pump blood through the constricted vessels. It is important to keep your blood pressure as low as possible, so that your heart can pump effectively without extra stress.
Monitor your own symptoms. Check for changes in your fluid status by weighing yourself daily and checking for swelling.
Schedule regular doctor appointments. .
More Tips
Stop smoking or chewing tobacco.
Reach and maintain your healthy weight.
Control high blood pressure, cholesterol levels and diabetes.
Exercise regularly.
Do not drink alcohol.

Check into natural remedies…to take along with your doctor’s prescribed medicines and treatments.
Check out Dr. Barry Sears, he has done amazing work with hormones, inflammation, sugar levels
Research the different health diets available.

Learn about your condition. Research what is available to help you control heart failure. Talk to others that are managing their condition successfully…what are they doing?

Learn to help yourself. Be an active partner in your own treatment!

High Flying Stock: Pacific Ethanol Inc.

By admin on October 11, 2010

Pacific Ethanol, Inc. is a publicly traded company (NASDAQ: PEIX) that is engaged in the development, production and marketing of renewable fuels in the United States. The company has five ethanol plans under construction on the West Coast with expected capacity of 200 million gallons. In addition, the company’s wholly owned subsidiary is one of the largest marketers of ethanol and generated in excess of $82 million in sales last year.

To many investors, the whole concept of ethanol is new. Ethanol is a fuel additive that is commonly made from corn, but can also be made from wheat, barley, potatoes and other crops. In addition, new technologies are enabling the production of ethanol from corn stalks, grain straw, paper pulp and even municipal solid waste. The starch or sugar portion of the corn is fermented and then distilled into alcohol. Sounds like a new concept, but early versions of the first automobiles ever produced ran on gasoline or ethanol!

Since January, the stock of Pacific Ethanol, Inc. (NASDAQ: PEIX) has increased almost 400% and currently trades at a market valuation in excess of $1 billion. Why all the investor excitement?

Pacific Ethanol may be in the right place and at the right time for the following reasons:

a) Ethanol is a commercially viable fuel additive that is rapidly taking the place of a fuel additive which has been banned in many states.

b) Ethanol additives results in less pollution than existing gasoline.

c) Demand for ethanol has far exceeded the industries production capacity.

d) A large number of vehicles are already capable of using gasoline mixed with an ethanol additive, usually under a 10% ethanol / 90% gasoline mixture. In addition, many manufacturers have committed sharp increases in the production of vehicles that can take much higher percentages of ethanol.

e) The production of ethanol has been highly profitable.

f) Federal and State governments are rapidly moving towards the use of alternative fuels to reduce dependence on foreign oil.

g) The company has one of the strongest management teams and a very experienced board of directors.

h) The company has attracted significant funding, including approximately $84 million in preferred stock from Cascade Investment, LLC, which is owned by Bill Gates.

Historically, companies with strong management, access to necessary investment capital and with critical mass in a rapidly growing industry – are companies to watch very closely. We believe that the Pacific Ethanol is well positioned to capitalize from the production and marketing of ethanol and should be watched closely.
